A strengthened Rift gives the user Runes
The process of killing monsters in The Elder Rift fills up a blue progress bar that is located at the lower right of your screen. When the bar is full then a Rift Guardian boss is summoned. In contrast to Challenge Rifts, which the player is automatically unable to complete if the Rift is not completed by the time the timer expires, Elder Rifts can still be completed successfully after the time has passed. The Rift Guardian who is killed before the timer runs out gives the player additional rewards, which is why there's incentive to fill up the progress bar as fast as is possible. However, even if the player dies several times in the Rift the rewards will remain the same in the event that they finish the game and beat the Rift Guardian on time.
The use of Crests and Legendary Crests can allow the player to strengthen their Elder Rift. A strengthened Rift gives the user Runes as well as Legendary Gems, whereas an unpowered Rift provides the user with less valuable items. It's only worthwhile to run Elder Rifts if the player is equipped with the Crests to boost their power.
If otherwise, the player's time can be better used for other things like challenges, Bounties and other challenges. Even a simple Crest is a slim chance of awarding the participant the Legendary Gem. So long as the player is able to find Crests and Legendary Crests to choose from Elder Rifts are well worth the effort.
