A team from Blizzard North was able to rebuild a good portion of the code and assets from the version of Diablo that developers took with them to home for playing. But the original code and assets were apparently lost, meaning Blizzard will have a difficult when it comes to constructing a Diablo Remaster today.
"[Weeventually rebuilt some of it by using what was left behind in houses," Erich Schreiber said. "I had a big chunk of it. We went to the house, and took off the HDD, or whatever else we were doing back then. We spent a few days reassembling it, which ended up working perfectly, but it lost all the history. We lost most of assets, artwork assets. This would make it extremely challenging for Blizzard to carry out a Diablo 2 remaster because all the assets we've used are now gone. They'd have to start completely from scratch."
