Rogues specialize in three ways. One of these is Combo Points, which seem to be based on a series of timing-based attacks that stack damage--director Luis Barriga likened it to a sort of rhythm game. The second one is Shadow Realm, which puts the player in temporary stealth and allows him to land attacks unharmed when in fighting. The final option is Exploit Weakness is one of the reaction-based specializations where an icon appears on an enemy and you must time counters to inflict more damage. Players do not have to select one specialization and can combine capabilities to make their own styles and builds.

In a conversation with game director Luis Barriga, he stated that the first Diablo Rogue was a starting point to develop the character class in Diablo IV.

"So the idea is that the Rogue is godmother is a good one, I guess, in this case of as with all Dexterity based classes within RPGs." he said. "What I'm referring to is that you could add all those elements to the class we liked from say The Assassin or The Demon Hunter. This is the time to do it with Diablo IV, of course we'd like to go beyond D1.
