We don't have any news to say about the Diablo 2
If you're unaware, in Diablo 2 you would hire followers to fight the hell gates along with you, however when they died, you had to bring them back with cold, hard cash. There was a new follower in each zone. This means that certain followers were more powerful than others.
This was a change in Diablo 3, where instead of hiring mercenaries to help you, you obtained three different companions throughout the story's adventure. There was the Scoundrel Sorceress and Templar which represented various aspects like DPS tank, ranged DPS, and magic player respectively. In the course of my Diablo 4 adventure I only encounter helpful NPCs, who hung around for a few days before heading off to the sunset. When I inquired of Jackson how the game's follower function would work the answer was "for the initial edition of the game we do have a few places within the story that you'll encounter certain known NPCs who will follow you and help you as you figure out the what Lilith is up to around the globe.
"We don't have any news to say about the Diablo 2-type follower that you hire - we're sticking it to the campaign for the moment." It's all about the present.
