World of Warcraft has more microtransactions that are available in game than ever before (and it seems like even many more are coming in the near future) however, the game isn't heading towards becoming pay-to-winaccording to creative director Alex Afrasiabi says."That is not the direction that we're comfortable in taking with WoW," Afrasiabi told P2Pah during a recent preview event to preview the new expansion Warlords of Draenor.

Pay-to win models undermine the trust of players as well as Blizzard has no intention of creating a trust issue, Afrasiabi said.

"Game design", half of it is about trust. And I think that our players trust us implicitly, and you don't wish to violate trust between the player and the developer. Pay-to-win is a good way to do the same thing. And I think that is really our stance; we do not support pay-to-win games on World of Warcraft . This isn't going to happen."

Earlier this week, it was announced--but not confirmed that soon World of Warcraft players might be able to pay as little as $60 to automatically level a character up at the current level of 90. Previously, players had to put in a lot of time or more in order to achieve the same level. Many fans saw this as an indication of the quality of the gaming experience was declining.

It is also possible to spend real money to purchase virtual items, such as mounts, pets and in-game pets. These microtransactions are added to World of Warcraft 's existing $13/month subscription. It seems that microtransactions are likely to play an important role in Blizzard's future as well since the company recently created a "Microtransaction Strategy" business division.

The increase in virtual goods available in World of Warcraft does not look like it has driven users away. It's true that World of Warcraft ended 2013 with 7.8 million active users, which is up 200k over the prior quarter. Of of course, this is down from a record high of 12 million gamers following the release in Wrath of the Lich King in the year 2010. But growth more than 9 years into a product's lifecycle--especially a paid MMO--is nothing short of impressive.

What are your thoughts on the present state of World of Warcraft as it involves microtransactions? Tell us your thoughts in the section comments.

World of Warcraft : Would you be willing to spend $60 to auto-level an individual character to 90?

Soon, you'll have the choice of spending hours leveling a World of Warcraft character to 90. or pay $60 to hit the current limit quickly According to an image taken from the game's test servers and published on MMO-Champion.
