In its inception, in 2016, the U.S. Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) validated the need for radar-guided aircraft to address the threats posed to our skies by evolving drone technology. Business owners and Fortem Technologies co-founders Timothy Bean and Adam Robertson knew they had something special to share with the world and began working with DARPA.
As a radar company, Fortem Technologies has developed advanced radar solutions for short- and long-range, fixed, and mobile missions. In 2017, the Air Force Research Laboratory released a Small Business Innovation Research Initiative (SBIR) targeting counter-drone technology. Bean and Robertson seized the opportunity to market what would eventually become known as the DroneHunter® F700—a radar-guided platform designed to detect and defeat hostile drones.
Fortem won a direct contract with SBIR II to begin the development of the F700 prototype (completed using a commercial off-the-shelf drone) with a focus on improving the operating software (SW) for the most accurate radar, real-time guidance, and autopilot integration. Once the OS stabilized, our engineers started working on improving the existing (animal) net guns seen on early C-UAVs, which could only capture stationary or slow-moving target drones.
