RuneScape isn't just a random collection of people
There are five kinds of attacks you can master including slash, stab crush, magic, and ranged. At first, my measly prey consisted of goblins and chickens, however there's plenty of bigger and more deadly prey there. Predators, too. Sure, RuneScape has a steep learning curve at the beginning. Once I had the basic skills mastered, I could let it all go and I soon was unable to walk away from the computer screen.
The typical Lumbridge scene
Yes, 232 total, spread across a generously-sized world map varied enough to keep my twelve year old self, each of them a distinctive short story with an outrageous plot and witty dialogue. Some of my personal favorites are solving the mystery of missing chickens at Draynor Manor and sneaking into the seemingly inaccessible Black Knights' Fortress on behalf of the rival White Knights of Falador. However, neither one of them can beat killing the dragon on Crandor - by far the most memorable and memorable achievement a player who is free to play can do. There are more quests that can be unlocked by being a paid player of RuneScape which I did. The game also gives access to huge portions of the map of the world along with a myriad of additional things that stood me away from the noob I'd previously been.
You can of course simply roam around in the vast plains and deserts or travel east into the dark, vampyre-infested swamps that lie in Morytania, ideally playing the Bobby Pickett song 'Monster Mash' playing in the background. Speaking of songs, entering an area for the first time unlocks the corresponding soundtrack(s) to the region. There are some very catchy tracks in there. I remember listening to an original Christmas song playing on repeat.
Black Knights' Fortress
In addition to the action, role-playing is the most massively multiplayer element that I enjoyed immensely, and it was fantastic to have thousands gamers to play with, trade with, and judge my performance against. RuneScape also includes friends lists and on-screen chat, proving to my small PS2-configured mind gamers can have communal as well as a solo experience. PvP (player against player) locations are plentiful including the sudden death tension in Duel Arena to the frenzied chaotic chaos in Castle Wars. If I'm looking for something more tranquil, I can relax by the river in Lumbridge or in a town market and let the virtual world pass through.
The Old Nite
For all its cut-throat competitiveness, RuneScape isn't just a random collection of people. Well, okay, it is this ... but like every other community, RuneScape's can band together and help each other out with the form of a few moments of glory worthy of the knightly honour often portrayed on screen. The greatest deed should be on behalf of the game's developers Jagex who dedicated an inside-game monument (and later, a pub) to the memory of one of the best players known as 'The Old Nite The Old Nite' who tragically passed away in the real world in 2006. He'd been active almost since the game's launch since 2001, and frequently held the mantle of second-highest ranked player which was just behind Zezima. Due to alleged activity on his profile following 2006, it was believed that he was still alive however, this was believed to be due to hackers gaining access temporarily to his account that was locked. Although neither can be fully substantiated however, this virtual representation of a ghost story can reveal a cool aspect of MMORPGs and the fact that a plethora of legends can start up about the gamers who play their games.
