RuneScape is a painstaking war of attrition that is lengthy

I'm not sure if the statue to The Old Nite still exists, but it stood near to the southernmost edge of the Wilderness (or "Wildy" in short) an enormous expanse of scrubland in the north, frequented in the past by animals and players-killers. I've never made it to the place to visit it. Really, I was stupid.

One of the biggest weaknesses in RuneScape's game, and it could also be its greatest assets, is one found in almost every other MMORPG: sheer longevity. Between all the thrilling adventures and high-octane PvP fights is the endless grind away at mundane chores such as mining, fishing or cooking in order to level up or get the credits needed to purchase the latest helmet or piece of armor. Gotta make money somehow, right?

Although these can be slightly relaxing, they are an endless amount of time doing the same things over and again - time that might or may be better spent around with some shorter but no less classic video games.

Rather than being one straight battle, RuneScape is a painstaking war of attrition that is lengthy and tiring and which never truly ends. However, it's satisfying if you're willing to commit the effort to it, as I was. At the very least, for a whole year or so.

I've not played any MMORPGs sincethen, to my inexplicably shameful loss. There are so many real-life concerns and I just cannot afford to allow them to entice me. In all the games I've played it is the most time-consuming, having endless levels to climb and things to collect. People have even perished within or as a result of lengthy sessions of RuneScape's more youthful but loved sibling, World of Warcraft, which I'm guessing also makes it an extremely scary game.

Nowadays, you'll generally find me playing Quake as well as Half-Life or hanging out on Team Fortress 2 - games that come out in force create a lasting impression and then disappear. It's great to play something I can enjoy and then go on to forget about it quickly, instead of worrying about how many pieces of wood I have in my inventory or the location I'm likely to fish during the next session.
