Odds are, if you were born in the early 2000s and had access to Internet, you would likely have played RuneScape. It was an early MMORPG and pioneering in the creation of an online experience for role-playing that players could access via their browser.

The days are gone when players required Java in order to launch the RuneScape character. These past few years have seen this long-running game going mobile and offering a new game to players who aren't as experienced, and even the original Java version for those who long to revisit it.

The world of MMORPGs has come a long way since then, with Final Fantasy XIV being a prime example of how expansive the genre has grown. However, if you'd like to make a return to RuneScape but don't desire to take as much time as the previous games, their latest effort might be just the right choice for those who are.

Jagex is the developer of RuneScape, has teamed up with tabletop-gaming company Steamforged Games to create both an online board game as well as a tabletop RPG (TTRPG) primary book inspired by RuneScape's fantastical world of Gielinor.

Both games are set to be a delight for RuneScape and Old School RuneScape's player communities with modern and faithful renditions of the classic characters and quests which incorporate the most iconic elements of these games into captivating interactive experiences that have been reimagined to be suitable in tabletop-based gaming. The Gower brothers built organically a community over the space of time, they did mistakes and took enormous leaps in the right direction, due to their experience in the field at the time allowed it. The kind of game like RuneScape couldn't be developed in the present day.

RuneScape was a passion idea that was created by three brothers within their parents' kitchen. They made it using the gaming magazines' free software. It was monetized so they could justify working on the game full time, while keeping the game being completely free to play.

From the kitchen they eventually built their first office and were still creating their own desks and computers as they sat down to interview potential employees. It's a wonderful story that everyone wants to believe could be true across the entire industry.
