Why is there a Madden curse?

One thing that's not talked about aside from Denver Broncos fans is when we were at Denver and I swung through their defense like the hot knife that cuts through butter. Not bragging, but it's all about the size that I was at the time and how low I was when I went to college in running with my pad. That means you'd never catch me upright running with my pads, unless I had someone standing 5 or six yards behind me trying to catch me. However, when I was on the move, in the thick of things it took me just one moment to realize that not running around your pads is harmful to your health. I can't think of his name but it was a linebacker with the Cardinals during their time in Phoenix. He blew me up. He took me down on the 6or 7-yard line, and dropped me on the 2. He helped me get up and said, 'Hey Bo Hey, look, you need to help me get my money. You need to run harder. I'm looking at him as if he's done lost your damn mind. I'm not going up in the hole anymore.' The next play I bounced it to the outside and then used my speed.

In that game [Denver], once I got through all the players, I ran into one of the linebackers, then jumped over another. And if I'm not mistaken I also hit their All-Pro linebacker [Karl] Mecklenburg who sprinted past the defensive back towards the goal line. That's one play that stands out for me because I was required to getting someone to miss, leap in the air, low and sprint for 60 yards to score a touchdown.

What went through your mind when you first saw you on the Madden cover?

I just sat back and said, 'Man, you're still there.' I did something right. And that's what I preach to guys like Derrick Henry and Saquon Barkley Don't mess up. If you do it right on the first try, you will be remembered forever.

The Madden curse doesn't have any effect on you at the moment you think?

Why is there a Madden curse? [Laughs.] I'm not affected by it.

You weren't playing with your friends at Tecmo Bowl. Will you play with yourselves in Madden?

I'm not sure. What I am doing now is spending lots in time playing with my new grandchild. This means that I'll likely purchase the game and save the game for his. But I'm eager to see it come out. Believe you me, I'll have my own collection of Madden games to give out to my family and friends as Christmas presents.
