RuneScape didn't reach its highs without a few hiccups
The leap from hobby to fan-driven project was certainly scary But looking at where I've ended up and the support I've received in establishing Games by Malcs as an rising studio, it's definitely worked out for the best."
Despite the apparent connection with Melvor Idle and RuneScape, and the involvement direct of Jagex the publisher chose to maintain the game as an original IP rather than make it the official RuneScape spin-off. In part, this was acknowledgment that Malcolm was successful where Jagex has failed.
"We actually did look at the idea of creating an idle RuneScape game a few years ago when we launched RuneScape: Idle Adventures," Pfeiffer says. "In Alpha, we stopped development and focused effort on main RuneScape games.
We've always believed in RuneScape's potential in the idle space and Melvor Idle has proven that RuneScape can provide a thrilling idle game. But Melvor Idle stands up on its own merits too so we wanted stay as true to the original vision of the game that Brendan initially had when he began making his game."
Pfeiffer also mentions the success of Melvor Idle as proof of how talent can emerge from the community of any game which is something Jagex has seen before. "We've always been able to find this RuneScape community to be a great opportunity for talent at Jagex not just terms of game designers but every role within a games studio" he says. "RuneScape has seen over 300 million accounts created in more than 20 years, which means the amount of talented people that have played the game is staggering."
After the successful collaboration that was formed with Games By Malcs, Pfeiffer states that he's interested in working more indie development with developers from around the globe who are working on project that "align with RuneScape's design philosophy and Jagex's core values", and he's hoping Melvor Idle's success will inspire more indies to reach out to the studio.
