The reports suggest that FIFA 23 -- which is due to launch in the coming months as EA's final game under the FIFA license -- will further extend it's World Cup mode and include the women's World Cup for the first time in the history of the franchise. "Our final FIFA game will also have more game modes and features, teams leagues, players and tournaments than the previous version," EA said in an announcement.

The split between EA and FIFA isn't a huge surprise. The gaming giant-publisher has publicly stated that they were "reviewing our name rights agreement with FIFA" in October of last year amid reports of clashes regarding the cost of licensing and exclusivity. A report from February suggested that Wilson stated to EA staff that its FIFA license had "precluded our capability expand into areas that gamers want" with regard to gaming.

The specific EA Sports FC branding isn't an issue; the name was mentioned in trademark filings in the past year, and VentureBeat reporter Jeff Grubb confirmed the name during a chat in March in a chat with Giant Bomb.

In the year 2000, The New York Times revealed that FIFA demanded EA to increase the amount by $150 million that the publisher was paying annually for the rights to the brand name. In the meantime, EA was reportedly beginning to doubt the value the FIFA name had brought to its popular game franchise.

"Basically the only thing we receive from FIFA during a non-World Cup year is the 4 letters that are on the outside of the box, in a world where the majority of people don't even look at the box anymore since they purchase the game online," Wilson reportedly told employees at a November all-hands meeting.

FIFA promises to continue the annual soccer video branded by FIFA game

"The next "NFL2K" will not be an actual game. Here's what it could be referring to. Perhaps in anticipation of the announcement today, FIFA has announced that it was already cooperating with its new partner to develop "non-simulation" football games, which will be launched in the coming months. This is a reference to Take-Two's 2020 announcement about returning to the NFL2K franchise that will circumvent the exclusive license of EA for NFL "simulation" game by providing "non-simulation football experience."
