Many a video game has led to aspiring developers develop their own. But it's rare for an original work picked up by the company that made the original game.
However, this was the case for Brendan Malcolm, the one-man team at Australian producer Games By Malcs, whose idle RPG Melvor Idle is being published by Jagex which is the developer of RuneScape (a game that was key to Malcolm's motivation behind his own project.
Melvor Idle strips away the graphics and 3D environments of RuneScape and other MMOs and reduces it to a menu-based idle, where players manage their skills, inventory , and quests. Engaging in combat and winning awards XP and loot that can then be placed into the upgrade tree players want, while performing repetitive tasks like crafting or cutting wood yields each of them benefits.
And has also dabbled in several of the most popular idle games such as Clicker Heroes, Cookie Clicker and NGU Idle. While he enjoyed them, he felt the genre had the potential to do something that was more satisfying in a similar way as Jagex's most popular RPG.
"So I decided to challenge myself to develop my own but never really thinking that it would even be released, let alone become so popular," he tells GamesIndustry.biz. "I tried to design something that wasn't in the conventional idle game mold, something that was feature-rich and offered players a actual choice about how they wanted to progress rather than Buy OSRS Gold simply increasing the number of players on a daily basis.
