End of war and the rise of the communism
The WW2 ended on the 8th of May in 1945 and our country was under the influence of the Soviet Union due to the agreement signed during the war.Ssince then, our republic had not been a democracy till the Velvet revolution. Why? Many political parties were disbanded and the president had an awful lot of power that time. In 1948, the election were held and unfortunately, the communists won. There was a little spark of hope, but only a tiny which dissappeared when the representatives of other parties resigned as an act of protest against the Communist party. Those empy seats were taken rightaway by the communist representatives and the Communist party become the symbol of red terror. Many people who dared to stand for their own political opinions were sentenced. Some people were even sentenced to death, such as the most famous casulty of the communist terror, Milada Horáková.
Prague Spring
In 1968, Czech citizens were trying to lessen the repression of the Communists. They wanted to create a socialism with human face. The cenzorship, which had been imposed since the start of the Communists systém, was abolished. There were even a group of reformists in the Communist party, but on the 21st August in 1968 the army of the countries of the Warsaw Pact invaded our republic and took over it. The cenzorship was imposed again and the reformist punished badly.
Normalization
The invasion was followed by a harsh program of "Normalization" in the late 1960s and the 1970s. Until 1989, the political establishment relied on censorship of the opposition. Dissidents published Charter 77 in 1977, and the first of a new wave of protests were seen in 1988. Between 1948 and 1989 about 250,000 Czechs and Slovaks were sent to prison for political reasons, and over 400,000 emigrated
End of the communism
In November 1989, Czechoslovakia returned to a liberal democracy through the peaceful "Velvet Revolution" (led by Václav Havel and his Civic Forum). However, Slovak national aspirations strengthened and on 1 January 1993, the country peacefully split into the independent Czech Republic and Slovakia. Both countries went through economic reforms and privatisations, with the intention of creating a market economy. This process was largely successful; in 2006 the Czech Republic was recognized by the World Bank as a "developed country", and in 2009 the Human Development Index ranked it as a nation of "Very High Human Development".
