U4GM Guide: How GTA 5's Fourth Character Slot Works

Plenty of players notice that empty slot on the GTA 5 character wheel and assume Rockstar hid another story hero in there. It's an easy mistake to make. You hold Down on the D-pad, nudge the right stick toward Michael, Franklin, or Trevor, and there it is at the bottom, looking like it should do something. If you're setting up a fresh run or looking at GTA V Accounts for a quicker start, it helps to know what that fourth space actually means before chasing rumours around Los Santos.

What the fourth slot is really for
The fourth option isn't a secret campaign character. It's your GTA Online character. Once you've created a character in GTA Online, that blank space on the wheel changes, and you can select it by pulling the right stick down. Choosing it doesn't drop that character into the single-player story. Instead, it moves you from story mode into GTA Online, where your custom character lives, works, races, fights, buys property, and gets into all the usual chaos with other players.

How to make it appear on the wheel
You don't need to finish the whole story or collect anything strange to unlock the slot. You just need to enter GTA Online and create your character. After that, the game remembers them. Go back to story mode, bring up the character wheel, and the bottom slot should no longer be just a mystery silhouette. It's a handy shortcut, really. Many players use it when they're done with missions as Franklin or Michael and want to jump straight into their online businesses, heists, or free roam sessions without digging through extra menus.

Can you use someone else in story mode
For the main campaign, the answer is still no. GTA 5's story is built around Franklin, Michael, and Trevor, and the missions are tied to their lives. You can't properly add a fourth protagonist to that structure. That said, there is a fun workaround if you just want to mess about as other people. Director Mode lets you play as a wide range of characters and NPCs, depending on what you've unlocked through story progress. You can access it from the Rockstar Editor menu, or by dialing 1-999-5782-5368 on the in-game phone.

Why Director Mode feels different
Director Mode is more of a sandbox than a normal campaign feature. You can wander around as cops, pedestrians, animals in some cases, and other familiar faces, but you won't be progressing the main story that way. It's great for making clips, testing scenes, or just doing something weird for ten minutes because GTA is at its best when plans fall apart. If you'd rather skip the slow setup and get into online play faster, some players look at cheap GTA V Accounts before spending their evening building everything from scratch.Jump into GTA 5 with U4GM and get more from every switch, whether you're rolling with Trevor, Michael, Franklin, or taking your GTA Online character for a spin.
